A Wade Lowe creation
This is my first blog post… ever. It will probably suck. I’m ok with that because who’s really good at anything they do the first time, certainly not me. If you are one of those people then you and I aren’t going to get along very well so you should stop reading now anyway. It’s not about this being good or not being good, it’s about the fact that I’m actually doing it. I’m accomplishing something I’ve wanted to do for a long time now and haven’t done. So really, it’s about hearing that still small voice and actually listening to it. I’ve been doing that a lot over the last few years and it’s turning out well so I figure I’ll keep at it.
Now that I’ve started writing I have to figure out what to write about. The better question is why people would want to read what I have to write? What value can I bring to someone who reads this? I’m no super successful entrepreneur, nationally recognized athlete or specialist in anything in particular so who cares and why should they read anything I have to say? Here’s where I landed. I have crammed in to my 36 years of life 100+ years of different experiences… exaggerating slightly, but not really and because of that I’ve learned a few things. Those things might be valuable and useful to you so I thought I would share some things I’ve learned through my experiences, hoping they might be able to help you in some way. That’s the best I’ve got for now. Like I said, it’s my first blog post.
In my 36 years I have had my ass handed to me on multiple occasions, both figuratively and literally. Literally, I’ve lost many fights. I’m not sure what’s worse, the fact that I used to get in fights or the fact that I lost. I’m also 0-4 in my amateur boxing career. In my defense I was 30 and fighting against late teenage and early twenties kids training for the Olympics. None the less, I still lost. Figuratively speaking, I’ve had my share of defeats in the areas of love, business, money, friends, and on and on. Yet, here I still stand, moving forward and persisting to build a life that has purpose and meaning to me. If nothing else, I can teach you the value of perseverance.
Life is too short to take it so seriously. If you know me well you understand the irony of me writing that sentence, but it’s true and I’ve gotten much better about laughing often, especially at myself. It also helps that my wife and my brother are two of the funniest people I know. Much of their humor is it at my expense, but it’s mostly well deserved and it is very funny. I’ll share those stories here and I bet they’ll make you laugh.
Public service announcement. Be nice. Life is better when you’re nice and I’ll demonstrate that to be true through my own personal experiences, stories and things I’ve learned from the work and studying I’ve done on the topic.
4. DIF (Discover, Illuminate and Follow)
This is probably the most bold of the claims on how I can help you, but I truly believe it. Everyone has a path to follow, but not everyone knows how to find that path yet alone follow it. I’ve found mine and I think I can help you find yours if you haven’t already. Here’s a hint… shhhhhh.
I can’t speak highly enough about the practice of meditation and what it can do in your life. This is an area I can speak to not just because of my personal experience, but also because of the research I’ve done on the scientific benefits of the practice. I’m no guru, but I know enough to know how much it can help you even if I don’t know who you are… yet.
6. Overcoming Fear
Here’s a perfect example. I’m scared to death of writing this post. Well, not actually writing it, but posting it. Here’s my thought process. Why would people care what you have to say? Who do you think you are? It doesn’t matter only Mom, Dad, Adam (my brother) and Jill (my wife) are going to read this anyway. Am I going to get fired? What will people think? And on and on and on until finally it ends with the world coming to end and we’re all dead because I wrote some crappy blog post. Anyway, you get the point. I get scared a lot. Way more than I like to admit, but I do things anyway and every time I do I get a little stronger and the voices become a little less loud.
My network isn’t the world’s best network, but honestly it aint half bad. If there is an area where you need help I probably know somebody in that arena that can help. Because it’s likely only my family is reading this I’m not worried about getting inundated with requests, so if you need help with something email me and let me know. If I can help I will. If I know of someone who can I’ll make the introduction.
If you’re reading this you’re probably realizing I’m pretty transparent and as authentic as I can be without doing damage to others. My experience is most human interactions are surface level and lack true authenticity. However, people respond incredibly well to authentic people because of the true connection it produces from one human to another. We are a social species and we desire meaningful connections even if people don’t realize that is what they are seeking. I’ll show you the benefits of being authentic.
Let go. Life is always changing and always will. Sometimes good, sometimes not so good, but it never remains the same. Stop trying to force your will on the world and realize nothing is permanent. Nothing really matters as much as you think it does. That mindset is liberating and freeing and will allow you to relax and stop gripping so hard. Just for the record, I was writing that to myself more than to anyone else.
I used to surf. Now I don’t. I was never really good, but man do I really enjoy that activity. Like all things it ebbs and flows so maybe offering to help people learn to surf will give me a reason to get back in the water. Hint, hint. Plus, I was running out of meaningful ways I can help you so this was the last thing I could come up with.
Interestingly, there is nothing in here about areas where I have had a lot of success, like business, sales, athletics, ambition design and blah blah blah. Why? Not because I can’t or don’t want to, it’s because I’ve spent so much of my adult life focused on those things and it hasn’t served me well (regarding who I am as a person, not the specific results I’ve produced) so I’m making a conscious shift to focus on areas that have more meaning for me.
That said, those other areas will surely come up because that’s a big part of who I am and what I do, but for the moment this is where I am and what I’m designing my life to be focused on. So, those are the ways I think I can help you. If you’ve already got those down then no need to come back. If, like me, you have some work to do I hope you’ll come back and join us as we continue down this path and see where it goes! Not bad for a first post? Maybe? Let me know below. Thanks!
